Spring is here and it’s time to start working on your lawn again. Even so, it’s not all mowing and trimming. Sometimes you might not have any grass in either your front yard or more commonly, in your backyard. So how do you start up a new lawn? You pick the right grass first.
Types of Grasses
Finding the right grass can improve your curb appeal. There are two main types of grass you should know about: creeping and bunching. The three most common types of creeping grass are bluegrass, Bermuda grass, and warm-season grasses. With spring getting started and summer around the corner, it might be the right time to welcome creeping grasses onto your lawn.
Runners
These grasses use vines called runners to spread out and take root. The runners can appear aboveground or will flourish underground, but either way, they can still fall victim to thatching, which is a problem that can afflict all types of grass, no matter what they are. The secret is to maintain the grass.
Bunch Grasses
Let’s talk about bunch grasses next. The crown of the plant is, in this case, the core. It is where the runners start out from once the grass seeds sprout. Fescue and ryegrass belong to this category. Although it’s easy to assume that mowing the lawn damages the grass, when it comes to these species, it turns out that the opposite is true! Mowing the lawn helps the crown of the grass grow faster and stronger than it did before you mowed.
Cool Weather
Yes, grass can grow in cold weather. Here in the middle of March, some days are going to be warmer and some are going to be cooler. Look out for varieties such as bentgrass, perennial ryegrass, fine fescue, and tall fescue. It might be the wrong time of year to focus on the cooler-season grasses, but that doesn’t have to be a problem!
Warm Weather
It just means that you will have more time to cultivate warm-weather grasses. These grasses include Bahia, bermudagrass, centipede, St. Augustine, and zoysia. All of them adore being raised in warm weather. You will still have to do some research to learn more about how to grow these grasses, and if you are in the right climate zone to help them be as happy as can be!
