Here are four helpful fall maintenance tips for installing new sod.

Now is one of the best times to start prepping your lawn for winter and ensure you can marvel at a lush and healthy lawn in the spring. Fall is one of the best times to install new sod because you’ll give the sod enough time to grow roots before it becomes too cold. Sod takes about six weeks to become healthy, and the good news is that sod maintenance isn’t much different than regular lawn care. Here are four helpful fall maintenance tips for installing new sod.

Rake Leaves Before Installing New Sod

Leaves eventually decompose. However, not removing leaves from your lawn can hurt sod maintenance for a few reasons. Wet leaves, in particular, can block sunlight and reduce airflow to your grass. Also, wet leaves can hold in moisture, leading to fungus growth. Two alternatives are keeping the leaves, making a compost pile to fertilize your lawn or garden, or mulching them to create fertilizer.

Don’t Stop Mowing Your Lawn

You don’t have to mow your lawn as often in the Fall, but you don’t want to stop mowing altogether. We suggest lowering the blade on the mower each time you grow until you reach 1-1.5 inches. This height is the most optimal for fall lawn care.

Apply Fertilizer to Your Lawn

You don’t want to apply fertilizer to your lawn immediately after installing new sod. It’s best to wait until November if your sod is less than six weeks old. It’s essential to keep your grass well-fed during the winter.

Water Your Lawn Properly

Another essential part of fall lawn care is properly watering your grass. You don’t want to saturate your grass, nor do you want it to be parched. Note the amount of rainfall your grass is getting and if you need to water it less or more. A rule of thumb is to keep your lawn damp until the water is about five inches deep. This method will keep your grass healthy even when your lawn becomes dormant during the winter.
