Survive the Summer with Drought-Tolerant Sod

Drought is rough on grass, so make sure to prepare your yard with suitable drought-resistant sod!

Phew! It’s hot out there, and it’s expected to only get hotter on the east coast over the next few weeks. Although drought is not currently on the radar, with how strange the summer weather seems to be in the mid-Atlantic region over the last few years, there is no doubt it is still a lingering possibility. As you can probably guess, a drought is tough on most types of grass and grass sod. Unless you are lucky enough to have a state-of-the-art sprinkler system incorporated in your yard, it may be difficult to keep your lawn looking happy and healthy when there is barely any rainwater to feed it with. Luckily, there are plenty of varieties of drought-tolerant sod out there to choose from to prevent this problem from occurring. Want to learn more about drought-tolerant sod? Look no further than this blog!

Buffalo Grass Drought-Tolerant Sod

Buffalo grass is a popular grass with gardeners due to its resilience and need for much less water than other types of sod. This drought-tolerant sod features coarse and sharp blades of grass, which are super resistant to physical damages. Lastly, Buffalo drought-tolerant sod does not need to be mowed as often as other sod varieties, making it an ideal choice for any newbie landscaper.

Zoysia Sod

Zoysia sod is another popular drought-tolerant sod, especially with Marylanders. This is because Zoysia is famous for its beautiful, rich green shade, and it’s also a premier choice for high-traffic lawns due to its strong roots. Zoysia also does not require nearly as much water as some other sod types to grow, making it a perfect choice of drought-resistant sod.

Bermuda Grass

Bermuda sod is probably the most famous type of drought-tolerant sod on this list simply because it is the favorite turfgrass of outdoor sports fields and courses. This is because it is able to withstand an exceptional amount of heat with very little shade, much better than other types of drought-resistant sod. The only downside to Bermuda grass is that it grows very quickly and requires frequent mowing, so it’s a better fit for lawn-care enthusiasts.

Bahia Grass

Bahia grass is very similar to Bermuda grass, but it is a bit more versatile. It is a natural insect and disease and drought-resistant sod, which is a huge plus for many lawn owners looking to save on pesticide costs. However, like Bermuda grass, it grows very quickly,  especially in the warm seasons, so a lot of maintenance is required.
